Your Style Guide to Coloured Denim

You know that coloured jeans are in right now—after all, your girlfriend looks great in her green, orange, and meringue coloured skinny jeans—but you still aren’t 100% sure if it’s a look you can pull off. The latest fashion trend offers many great alternatives to traditional blue jeans and both men and women everywhere are embracing the look. Celebrities from Zac Efron to Kanye West have been spotted rocking coloured jeans. So how can you ensure that you maintain your suave appearance and avoid looking like a circus clown as you delve into the unchartered realm of coloured pants? Simple, follow our 4-step guide to finding the perfect pair of coloured denim to add to your wardrobe.

Step #1: Choose Your Hue

You might think those bright yellow pants looks great on the shelf, but think twice before going for such a wild summer colour this fall. Your coloured denim is sure to get you noticed, but by choosing from the traditional autumn palette you’ll guarantee that the attention you receive is positive. Keep your eye out for deep crimson oranges, dark purples, and burgundy reds. Stick to classic fall colours and you’ll be able to pair your jeans with more outfits, and you’ll stand out in a crowd without looking out of place.

Step #2: Stick to Neutral Tones

Even a mild fall colour can become obnoxious if it’s in the wrong shade. Pick a funky colour, but stick to neutral tones to keep your look stylish and composed. A soft, neutral tone can make the difference between being mistaken for a street performer and catching the eye of that cute coworker. Red is a great fall colour to incorporate into your wardrobe, but a smooth, velvety burgundy is going to flatter you much more than a neon stoplight red.

Step #3: Pay Attention to Fit

Okay, this is an important step when purchasing any type of pants, whether they’re coloured or plain, khaki or denim. However, coloured denims will draw much more attention to you than plain-old blue jeans, so you need to pay extra attention to how the fit accentuates your lower half. Straight-leg or boot cut styles are generally the most flattering, since they create the appearance of a straight line and elongate your body.

Step #4: Coordinate Your Outfit

Just because you’re stepping out of the box by wearing colourful jeans doesn’t mean you can forget the most basic of fashion rules. Repeat after me: I cannot and will not wear a loud top with my coloured pants. Coloured tops are fine and coloured jeans are fine, but pick one or the other, or risk looking like a jester. You also need to consider which footwear you are coordinating with your coloured denims. Select appropriate footwear that doesn’t clash with or challenge your jeans. Avoid bright sneakers and go for something simple and sleek. Front-laced boots or simple boat shoes are great options, especially if you stick to beige, black or brown colours.

A guide to golf fashion (and how to improve it)

Golfers aren’t famous for being the most stylish. Use these tips to change all that.

WEAN YOURSELF FROM THE POLO

Since the 1950s, polo shirts have long been the most reliable piece of clothing on the course, after sport jackets, ties and button-up shirts phased out. But sometimes old style can’t be beat: just consider the double-breasted suit. And while you’re contemplating that, think about the simple fact that a shirt is simply more aesthetically pleasing than a polo, and, if you pick a light fabric, is just as comfortable. And besides, wearing even something as simple as a casual dress shirt could lead you to be the talk of the course – Ryan Moore is drawing more attention to golf fashion than any other professional, simply by wearing a shirt, tie and occasional waistcoat.

Golf Fashion

YOU’RE NOT A WALKING ADVERTISMENT

It’s hard to avoid the few sport brands that have become ubiquitous in golf. It may be tempting to dress head-to-toe in highly visualized sportswear, either in an effort to emulate your favourite professional player, or in a desperate attempt to improve your par. Remember: those professionals are working on their pars under sponsorship deals, getting paid to be told what they can, and cannot, wear. The average player isn’t being sponsored, so shouldn’t have to dress as such.

BREAK THE NORM OF PLAID AND KHAKI

A quick look around the average golf course reveals a huge similarity between the course and everyday street fashion – plaid. While the pattern has been enjoying a revival, on the course it never dropped in popularity. It is in fact a norm – one of the choices that, while safe, isn’t too exciting. Thankfully it isn’t difficult to stand out from the pack. Take some advice from the high street and try bright blocks of colour.
